Blessed Sacrament School students participate in Model UN competition

BSS was the only school from Savannah participating in the event

(SAVANNAH) March 2009 – Blessed Sacrament School 6th and 7th graders participated in the 11th Annual Middle School Model United Nations competition sponsored by Georgia Southern University Continuing Education Center at the Coastal Georgia Center this month. Blessed Sacrament School was the only school from Savannah participating.

“One of my principal goals in establishing Blessed Sacrament School's Model United Nations Club was to get middle school students to think outside of themselves, to think globally and critically,” said Rebecca S. Faucette, Advisor for the Model United Nations Club and Director of the school’s Extended Day Program. “It's a natural fit for adolescents who are starting to question the world around them.”

In Model UN, students step into the shoes of ambassadors from UN member states to debate current issues on the organization's agenda. Students make speeches, prepare draft resolutions, negotiate with allies and adversaries, resolve conflicts, and navigate the conference rules of procedure –  all in the interest of mobilizing “international cooperation” to resolve problems that affect countries all over the world.

Thirteen students represented six countries in the General Assembly and two countries in the African Union. This was Blessed Sacrament's first time competing and students received several awards:

The resolutions that were debated at the conference included:

  1. Preventing the Risk of Radiological Terrorism
  2. Sustainable Fisheries
  3. Preservation of Tropical Rainforests
  4. Protection of Migrants
  5. Promotion of a Democratic and Equitable International Order
  6. Prevention of Armed Conflict
  7. Promotion of Religious and Cultural Understanding, Harmony and Cooperation
  8. Access to Medication in the Context of Pandemics Such as HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria

Blessed Sacrament School was founded in 1939 with two classrooms and three sisters of Mercy as the first faculty. Today there are two sections of each grade level from Pre-K through 8th grades with a current enrollment of approximately 425 students. The school offers a rigorous, faith-based academic program and maintains small class sizes. Blessed Sacrament is part of the Catholic Diocese of Savannah and has received accreditation by both SACS (Southern Association of Colleges and Schools) and FCC (Florida Catholic Conference).
