Blessed Sacrament School students win math competition

Online math competition nets the school free math software

(SAVANNAH, Ga.) – Fourth graders at Blessed Sacrament School recently won a mathematics competition against several other Chatham County schools, while Blessed Sacrament School student Brendan Coleman was the overall individual winner. By winning the competition, students earned free mathematics software for the school.

“The kids were so excited and I do believe it motivated them to excel in math,” said Blessed Sacrament School fourth-grade teacher Paulina Tawil. “On the last day it was up to them to push themselves to come out ahead and they did. Some students gave up their recess and many went home to play for the last two hours left in the game, and that gave us the win.”

Sumdog's free online math games are designed to improve mental math fluency at grades K-8. Most of the games are multiplayer, letting students around the world practice their math against one another. There is no cost to either enter or participate in a contest.

The school will be awarded hundreds of dollars worth of mathematics software.

Parents found that their kids enjoyed the math competition.

“Sumdog got Brendan excited about math,” said Blessed Sacrament School parent Avis Coleman, mother of the overall individual winner. “He's always been exceptionally good with numbers but this game really sparked his competitive streak.  It was a great incentive to get him to do other things I needed him to do. I'd tell him he couldn't play Sumdog until he finished his breakfast, and he'd gobble it down.  It was and still is a great experience. He still plays even though the competition is over.”

Blessed Sacrament School was founded in 1939 with two classrooms and three sisters of Mercy as the first faculty. Today there are two sections of each grade level from Pre-K through 8th grades with a current enrollment of approximately 425 students. The school offers a rigorous, faith-based academic program and maintains small class sizes. Blessed Sacrament is part of the Catholic Diocese of Savannah and has received accreditation by both SACS (Southern Association of Colleges and Schools) and FCC (Florida Catholic Conference). Blessed Sacrament School is located at 1003 East Victory Drive.
