Red Cross to accept Blessed Sacrament School second-graders’ donation to tornado victims
(SAVANNAH, Ga.) – Blessed Sacrament School second-graders will present the Red Cross with money the raised for tornado victims at 9 a.m. Tuesday, May 31.
The students made cookies at home that they sold to other students in the school during lunch time Thursday and Friday of last week.
The Cookies for a Cause class project incorporated math, writing, computer, social studies lessons and a service project. The students polled the school to find out the favorite types of cookies and decided how many of each type to make according to demand.
They used a spreadsheet to look at the numbers and graphed the results. They then used Microsoft Publisher to make fliers to let the other grades know about the sale and a letter to the other teachers asking them to let their students know about the sale.
Second-grade teacher Tricia Sheahan started the Cookies for a Cause project last year to help the victims of the earthquake in Haiti. Those funds were donated to Catholic Relief Services.
Blessed Sacrament School was founded in 1939 with two classrooms and three sisters of Mercy as the first faculty. Today there are two sections of each grade level from Pre-K through 8th grades with a current enrollment of approximately 425 students. The school offers a rigorous, faith-based academic program and maintains small class sizes. Blessed Sacrament is part of the Catholic Diocese of Savannah and has received accreditation by both SACS (Southern Association of Colleges and Schools) and FCC (Florida Catholic Conference).
