Jeremiah J. McCarthy was born on May 14, 1953 in Cork, Ireland. He is the eldest of six children, five boys and one girl. After completing high school he entered All Hallows Seminary in Dublin, Ireland to study for the Diocese of Savannah, Georgia. While attending All Hallows, he attended University College, Dublin where he obtained a Bachelors Degree in Economics. He continued his studies of Theology at the seminary and was ordained a priest on June 11, 1978. His first assignment in Georgia was as pastoral assistant at St. Teresa's Church in Albany, Georgia.
Upon the completion of three years at St. Teresa's, Father McCarthy was asked by Bishop Raymond Lessard to attend graduate school in Washington, D.C. He completed two years of study at Catholic University and obtained a license in Canon Law. He returned to Savannah in 1983 and began working in diocesan administration. In 1989 he was appointed pastor of Our Lady of Lourdes in Port Wentworth and he remained there until September of 1996 when he was appointed pastor of Blessed Sacrament Parish in Savannah. In addition to being pastor of Blessed Sacrament Church, Father McCarthy is also Judicial Vicar for the Diocese of Savannah. He is actively involved in the religious, as well as overall education, of all BSS students.
